Mr. Ivira Newsome was born in Portsmouth, VA on April 28, 1944 to the late Vivian Newsome. This very special man slipped away into eternal life on Friday, May 4, 2018. Ivira, affectionately known as Duke was always looking to help anyone, from a homeless person down on his luck to the pastor at any of the community churches.
Duke was a professional long distance truck driver, a maintenance supervisor at Clemson University for 8 years, and was also known as the “Go to Man”. If you needed something, Duke was the man who could get it for you.
He leaves to cherish his memory, two brothers, Earl Newsome of Philadelphia, PA and Robert Newsome of Raleigh, NC; a life-long loving companion, Laura Gaines; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Duke didn’t have any biological children, but he was a father and grandfather to many in the Gaines family, and a mentor to many in the community.
In addition to his mother, Duke was preceded in death by two sisters, Shirley Newsome and Mary Newsome.
The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 11, 2018 at Silver Spring Baptist Church. The interment will follow at Memory Gardens.
The family is at the home, 123 West Queen Street Pendleton, SC 29670.
