Dorothy Kirk Obituary

Dorothy Lee Kirk was born on November 14, 1933, in Anderson County, South Carolina to the late Rufus Gambrell, Sr. and Evangeline Gambrell. She was a resident of South Carolina in her beautiful home for 40 years. She departed life on October 5, 2023 at Henrico Doctors Hospital in Richmond, VA.

Dorothy loved helping people whenever she could, leaving her home open to those in need. In her younger years, she spent time with her late sister Birdie E. Tyler in Georgia and her late sister Ruby M. Wiggins in Kentucky. During that time, she met George Kirk who was in the Military and stationed at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky.

She married George Kirk on April 20, 1959 and eventually moved to West Chester, PA where she resided until moving back home to South Carolina in 1983. Dorothy was so excited to move back to South Carolina where she was able to spend time with her late sister Lorene G. Lee and her brothers the late William "Bobby" Gambrell and her remaining sibling, Rufus Gambrell.

Dorothy enjoyed her home and was always expanding and making improvements to it. Thanksgiving and Christmas were her favorite holidays and she would have many gatherings of loved ones during those times. She would also decorate so beautifully and had the prettiest Christmas lights in her neighborhood. She loved her garden as well and had flowers blooming, vegetables growing, and fruit trees in her garden no matter what time of the year. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and sending them gifts.

She managed an in-home care business out of her house and took care of the elderly for many years. During that time she met her partner, Rick Doker while taking care of his family. They developed a wonderful friendship and relationship for over 20 years, and he was able to later care for her. Dorothy and Rick loved a good ride around town and going out to eat at many different restaurants.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Linda A. Kirk of Richmond, VA and son, Kenneth K. Kirk of Coatesville, PA; eleven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Rufus Gambrell, Jr.; sister-in-law, Patricia Gambrell; eleven nephews, eight nieces, a host of great nieces and great nephews, several cousins and a
a multitude of friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Henry Kirk; parents, Rufus and Evangeline Anderson Gambrell; three sisters, Birdie E. Tyler, Ruby M. Wiggins, and Lorene G. Lee; and two brothers, Woodrow Gambrell and William "Bobby" L. Gambrell.
