We are gathered here today at this sacred hour to celebrate the life of Mrs. Irene Hunter. She passed away peacefully at her home on the evening of December 18, 2022 at the age of 92. She was born May 22, 1930 to Joe Richard Williams and Hattie Reed Williams. She was a sweet and gentle spirit. She was adventurous and inquisitive, and she loved life.
Irene was the loving wife of John Hunter, Jr. until his passing in September of 1991. They were the proud parents of three wonderful and caring daughters: Verona Hunter Thompson (Harry), Belinda Hunter Lee, (Willis) and Lisia LaVerne Hunter. Irene was retired from Michelin Tire Corporation. She joined Evergreen C.M.E. Church at an early age. Later in life she joined Mt. Moriah Baptist Church where her two brothers already attended. She was a member of Missionary Circle #1 and also sang on the Sanctuary Choir. Irene was a faithful member of the Iva Chapter No. 275 Order of the Eastern Star and Azzam Court #184, until her health declined.
Along with her three daughters, she is survived by one brother, Joe Williams (Faye); one sister-in-law, Flora Williams; and a special adopted daughter of the heart, Tawuana Omega Rossin; six grandchildren, Harry Thompson, Jr., Sydney Thompson Cunningham, Derrick Lee (Aliza), Johnathan Demays Lee (Randi), Letia Lee Johnson (Cedric), and Erica Smith Stover (Jason); eight great grands; three great-great grands; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Along with her parents and spouse, she was preceded in death by brothers, JB, James, Paul, Louvell, and Ernest Williams; sisters, Lillian Hamilton, Johnnie Ruth Crosby, and Ella Lee; and one great-granddaughter, Amber McGinnis.
Irene exemplified a life of kindness, love and generosity and she will be missed by all who knew her.
The funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, December 26, 2022 at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. The interment will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens. Public viewing 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. pm Saturday, December 24, 2022 at the funeral home.
