Pastor Mary Lou Mackey, (Our Hide behind the Mountain Soldier), age 82, after serving the Lord for over forty something years decided to sit down and rest a little while with her Savior. She took her rightful place by the Lord’s side on November 12, 2021.
Her sweet loving demeanor made it easy for her to be a confidant to many. Her laughter and sense of humor was very contagious. She is going to be missed tremendously but it’s very reassuring to know that she’s hiding behind the mountain, where the chilly winds don’t blow.
She is survived by three daughters, Minister Rebecca Mackey, Louise Mackey, and Mary (Flip) Simpson, four sons, James (Sonya) Mackey, Tommy Mackey, Otis Mackey, and Jeff (Melanie) Mackey, one sister, Iva Lee Johnson, one brother, Bobby (Joyce) Paul, and a host of grandchildren, great-grand children, nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was a mother to everyone but early in life, Ella Diane Moore was her child. Later, she would adopt Sherri Tillman into the family as her own.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Otis Junior Mackey, her parents, Josephine Paul Hunter Thompson and Jefferson Paul Sr., two sons, Roger Jr. Mackey and Pat Charles “Snake” Mackey, three sisters, Elizabeth Mackey, Doris “Bealy” Johnson, and JoAnn Paul Clayton, three brothers, Jefferson, “Junior” Paul, John Marvin Paul, and Lewis Melvin Paul.
Public viewing will be held on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 from 1:00 until 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 17, 2021 at First Baptist Church. The interment will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens.
The family is at the home, 18 North Hammett Street in Anderson, SC and the home of her daughter, Mary Simpson, 4 Oneal Farms Way Piedmont, SC.
