Ulas Alonzo Broom, Sr. departed this life on Saturday, July 9, 2022. He was born in Champaign, Illinois on September 19, 1936 to the late Rochelle, Sr. and Frankie Lee (Bobbie) Broom. He was the eldest of five children.
Ulas was educated in the Champaign and Danville, IL School Systems. He attended the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Danville, IL and later joined the Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Anderson, SC.
During his years in Danville, Ulas developed a love for baseball. He and his younger brother, Rochelle Broom, Jr, progressed to D-League ball, joining a semi-pro Negro team called the Keystone Athletics. Ulas was also a gifted artist and musician.
While visiting friends in Anderson, SC, Ulas fell in love with the hospitality and warm climate of the south; so much so he relocated to Anderson in 1990. He worked for Anderson School District Five, Guy Ford Motor Company, and later served as the Supervisor of Parks and Recreation for the City of Anderson Recreation Center. Ulas volunteered with the Men at Work Outreach Ministry, an organization aimed at mentoring young men through education, spiritual guidance, and skills building. Ulas met his wife, made lifelong friends, and upon his retirement in 2011 was recognized by the City of Anderson for his hard work, dedication, and commitment to our community.
Ulas was a frequent fixture at Mama Penn’s Restaurant reading morning devotions and the newspaper. Several articles have been written about Ulas appearing in the Anderson Independent Mail, the Anderson Magazine, the HomeTowner, and the Electric City News. He was interviewed and featured in the Southern Voice, giving his first-hand accounts of black history in America.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Sundra, his children Ronald (Carrie), Ulas, Jr.(Arthetta), Stewart, Bobby(Sarah), April, Yvonne, Shell(Rodney), and Jason(Len), and one sister Marie Cunningham. He also leaves to cherish his memory a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters Val London Kane and Jeanine; one son Douglas; two brothers Rochelle, Jr. and Eddie Lee; and one sister Relley Mae Bingham.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 15, 2022 at Salem Missionary Baptist Church. The interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens.
The family is at the home, 2116 Concord Road Anderson, SC 29621. Public viewing will be held on Thursday from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Broom will be placed in the church at 12:00 p.m. on Friday.
